I like to return to the two descriptions of Living Water Jesus gave in the book of John. To the woman at the well, Jesus said He could provide her with water that would spring up within her as a well of water but later on at the great feast He stood up in the synagogue and shouted with a loud voice, "If any man is thirsty, let him come unto me and drink. Out of his belly will flow rivers of Living Water" (Jn.7:38). Since verse 39 goes on to identify the Living Water as the Holy Spirit, the Christian who has the well of water springing up certainly has the Holy Spirit on the inside, but they are obviously not filled with the Spirit when compared to those who have a river flowing out of their belly.
Still, the question remains, "How?" How does one receive these rivers of Living Water flowing out of the belly? In Acts 1:4 we find the only commandment Jesus issues to Christians, a group of people that did not exist prior to Jesus' resurrection. The word "commandment" is actually found in the text. This commandment was to wait with fervent passion and anticipation for the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The word "baptize" means, "to immerse" as in the dyeing of a piece of cloth. On the day of Pentecost, 120 believers were immersed with the Holy Spirit and a git of tongues poured out of their bellies. The baptism with the Spirit is not an experience that one has and goes throughout the rest of their life baptized with the Spirit. The baptism with the Spirit is the act of the Living Water pouring out of the belly and Acts 2:4 identifies these believers as Spirit filled.
Paul could have just as easily have said "Let the gift of tongues pour out of your belly as a river," or "pray without ceasing in tongues," but the truth of the matter is, the importance should not be placed on the gift of tongues. The importance should be placed on releasing the Holy Spirit into and onto the earth. The reason Jesus said, "All who believe on me will have rivers of Living Water flowing out of their bellies" is because those who take Jesus at His word will realize the importance of releasing Living Water. Are you a believer on Jesus? Are rivers of the gifts of tongues pouring out of your belly? All believers in Jesus who wait with passionate anticipation will be filled with the Spirit.
We should be about taking advantage of all the benefits of speaking in tongues, and there are many benefits, but the truth of the matter is that according to Matthew 18:18, whatever we bind on earth is bound in heaven. This means if we do not allow the Holy Spirit to flow out of our bellies, He cannot flow out of heaven. Every Christian should be filled with the Spirit. In other words, they should be allowing the Holy Spirit to flow out of their belly as a river on a daily basis. A river is defined as a primary flow. It is just by God's design that when the Holy Spirit flows out of the belly, He manifests Himself as gifts of tongues.
